It’s the first large exhibition in the United States. And will take place at MoMA, New York. Starting by next week we will see an extraordinary spectacle that crosses nearly 40 years of inventive and original sculptures, paintings and photographs of the artist.
Isa Genzken is without doubt one of the most important and influential artists of the last 30 years, but the breadth of its realization – that extends between collages, drawings , artist books, films, installations and public works – is still poorly famous in United States. This exhibition, the first complete retrospective of his work and the largest to date, presents the artistic career of the artist since he began exhibiting in the mid- 1970s. Over the past decade a new generation of artists was inspired by his radical inventiveness . The catalog presents the career of Genzken through essays that explore the unfolding of its activities from 1973 to date, in a chronological overview of all of its major work groups and major exhibitions .
Born in Germany in 1948 , Isa Genzken is one of the most important artists living in Germany ( she is not so famous in his homeland ) . In the mid- 1970s, as a student at the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy , he created geometric sculptures in wood, which lead her to a first international success ( she exhibited at the contemporary art exhibition Documenta three times , represented Germany at the Biennale of Venice in 2007 and has received many important awards . ) . Since then he has made sculptures in plaster, cement and epoxy resin ranging in size up to 1990 . From the late 90s onwards, the Genzken began to create increasingly complex sculptural installations.
She repeatedly created metaphors with spray paint , twisted pieces of metal plate with bright colors hanging on the wall (named ” Gay Baby”) . Many of her images depicts destruction. She builds tableaux that are felt as three-dimensional film frames , creates beauty from the bad things, but also by wheelchairs. Humor is also a recurring theme in his work. For an installation she placed an assortment of sunglasses on the bust of Nefertiti.

La sua prima grande mostra in un museo degli Stati Uniti si apre la prossima settimana al MoMA, a New York. Lo straordinario spettacolo attraversa quasi 40 anni di inventive e originali sculture, dipinti e fotografie.
Isa Genzken è senza dubbio una delle più importanti e influenti artiste degli ultimi 30 anni, ma l’ampiezza della sua realizzazione – che si estende tra collages, disegni, libri d’artista, film, installazioni e opere pubbliche – è ancora poco conosciuta negli Stati Uniti. Questa mostra, la prima retrospettiva completa del suo lavoro e la più grande fino ad oggi, presenta il percorso artistico dell’artista da quando ha iniziato ad esporre a metà degli anni 1970. Negli ultimi dieci anni una nuova generazione di artisti è stata ispirata dalla sua inventiva radicale. Il catalogo presenta la carriera della Genzken attraverso saggi che esplorano il dispiegarsi della sua attività dal 1973 fino ad oggi, in una panoramica cronologica di tutti i suoi più importanti gruppi di lavoro ed esposizioni principali.
Nata in Germania nel 1948, Isa Genzken è una delle più importanti artiste viventi della Germania (lei non è così famosa nella sua patria). A metà degli anni 1970, come studentessa a Düsseldorf nella rinomata Kunstakademie, ha creato sculture geometriche in legno, che le hanno guadagnato il suo primo successo internazionale (ha esposto alla mostra d’arte contemporanea Documenta tre volte, ha rappresentato la Germania alla Biennale di Venezia nel 2007 e ha ricevuto molti premi importanti.). Da allora ha fatto sculture in gesso, cemento e resina epossidica di dimensioni variabili fino al 1990. Dalla fine degli anni ’90 in poi, la Genzken ha cominciato a creare installazioni scultoree sempre più complesse.
Ha ripetutamente creato metafore con spray, vernici, contorto pezzi di lamiera con colori vivaci appendendoli al muro e chiamandoli ” Gay Baby”. Molte delle sue immagini ritraggono la distruzione. Lei costruisce tableaux che si avvertono come fotogrammi di film tridimensionali, crea bellezza dalle cose brutte, anche dalle sedie a rotelle. L’umorismo è anche un tema ricorrente nel suo lavoro. Per una installazione ha disposto un assortimento di occhiali da sole sul busto di Nefertiti.
